I started down this rabbit hole when I was old enough to know how to use computers. I currently live in the Kansas City metro area, working in person at Garmin on some really niche networking stuff for airborne avionics equipment. Did you know that X.25 isn’t dead? In fact, we have to support an entire bespoke OSI model networking stack from Physical to Application layer, because without it, you can’t send text messages to ATC in Europe, and they get kind of mad at you for flying too high. As a double whammy, we also get to work with the much-loved ASN.1 encoding for application data streams.
In a professional capacity, I’ve acted as a full stack Python software engineer, database administrator, Android app developer, and small network administrator. I’m great at keeping systems configured and secure, and creating tools with deep interoperability constraints.
In my unprofessional capacity, I enjoy reading (fiction is great but so is a solid biography!), gaming (for singleplayer- platformers and visual novels are my bread and butter), running (but it doesn’t take too many miles to make me reconsider), and hacking stuff together. I’m a total completionist, so these ‘short weekend projects’ end up as production-grade monthlong apps.
I’m a huge fan of the new game-changing tech that is big data the metaverse NFTs Web3 DAOs IPFS AI and Agentic Programming. Or at least, data center technician is a pretty lucrative backup job. How else am I going to afford HVAC and RAM?
